Babies have very few activities. They eat, sleep, have bowel movements, and cry. They also have times where they are awake and are quiet. The problem comes with the times they are crying. The noise they make can almost drive you crazy, but have patience and you will learn to recognize the differ type of crying. Each sound will be distinct.
Remember, babies cry when they are uncomfortable, it is how they communicate to you. They cry when they are hungry, they cry when they have a wet or full diaper, they cry when they are tired, they cry when they get overstressed by actions or activities around them, they will cry when they are not feeling well, and they will also cry for attention when they are fed and dry. Here are some ways to figure out what they want.
Hungry – You will notice that your child is crying and also is sucking their fingers or trying to get to your breasts.
Diaper dirty – If the baby is crying and has been fed and had sleep then the first thing to check is the diaper. They learn quickly they don’t like the feeling of a messy diaper.
Tired – They will cry while dozing on and off, rubbing their little eyes, or yawning a lot.
Overstressed – It is easy for a baby to get stressed out. Everyone wants to see them and touch them. The other children may be making noise. They will adjust in time but if it happens, remove them from the stressful area or activity. This will often happen in stores where there is a lot of noise and activity.
Too cold or too hot – Babies need to be kept warm. Even if you are warm, they might not be. Keep them dressed warmly. If the house is hot, the baby might be too warm. Be aware of the temperature and you can keep the baby comfortable and happy.
Not felling well – Babies cry if they are not feeling well. They tell you two different ways, (1) Loud crying that differs from the normal, and (2) soft crying that continues. Always have a device to take the babies temperature. With children the temperature can go up or down very rapidly.
Wants to be held – Babies need to be held by their parents, especially after eating. They need to see them, hear their voices and be held closely so they can hear the parent’s heartbeat. Don’t worry about spoiling your child. This is something they must have, and spoiling is not a concern at this point. If you have work to do, get a front sling to carry them in. I used it and was able to take them with me as I did my work around the house and talk to them. We were both happy and there was no crying for attention.
The best way to keep your child from crying is to have a regular schedule. They need a time to eat, play, and then sleep. The very best way to keep a baby from crying is to keep them fed, dry diaper, and have time to hold them and play with them.
