Many people go only to name brand retail stores to do their shopping. As a result they spend more money and miss out on a real adventure. You’ll be surprised what you can find at garage sales and thrift stores.
Garage Sales
There are two types of garage, some people call them porch or yard, sales. Single or multiple family sales and the other is a business. Many people go to garage sales to buy items they will re-sale. Some sell these items in flea markets; others hold their own garage sales. As a result the items are priced higher, meaning less of a bargain.
How can you tell the difference? It’s difficult to tell, but not impossible. The professional yard sellers usually have a wider selection of items. They will have furniture, appliances, plenty of tables and games, and clothing that go from toddler up through adult. You can get some good deals, but they don’t negotiate.
You will find garage sales listed in the newspaper or with a sign on the corner. Make a list of the places you want to visit. Map out your route and go. Most sales take place on Fridays and Saturdays so you can plan for a family outing.
Other advantages to visiting garage/yard sales are: Some have clothing with the store’s price tags on them proving they are close to new, and appliances still in the box, unused or used just a few times.
If you find six shirts and they are a dollar each, don’t be afraid to ask the person selling the items if they will take five dollars instead of six. This is the “No harm, no foul rule.” If they say yes you saved a dollar, if they say no, you still got a good deal. Many people just want to get rid of items they no longer have a need for and are willing to take less than what they have marked on the item.
